1965 Ford Mustang GT Fastback For Hire
We've been hiring out a classic Ford Mustang Fastback since 1997. Our first one was a base level model 1966 Fastback. Although our customers loved it, there were a few minor criticisms: the drum brakes all round weren't really up to stopping a car of that weight and power; like most American cars of the period it had an automatic gearbox and there were no seat belts in the back.
After searching for a couple of years, we have now found a higher spec Ford Mustang to replace our original one. This one is a 1965 Mustang GT.
Being 1965 it is one year older than our other one, so is still the first generation Mustang body style but it has disk brakes on all four wheels, so the brakes are at long last up to the job. More importantly for those of us that prefer to change gear ourselves it has the famous 4-speed Top Loader manual gearbox.
Other minor improvements include lap seat belts in the rear as well as in the front, the RallyPac option which includes a rev counter and clock. It also has working air conditioning, so you can cruise in comfort even on the hottest of days.
When it left the factory it was fitted with the 289 cu in V8 (4,700 cc) but at some point in its life this was changed to the later 302 cu in engine - 4,949 cc. It still sports the V289 badges on the front wings though, as Ford don't make V302 ones.
If listening to the soundtrack of a 5.0 litre Ford V8 isn't enough for you it has a modern sound system fitted complete with CD player. You can listen to the sound of the V8 and the Beach Boys all at the same time.
I've been doing some research (Feb 2012) on the VIN number on our 1965 Mustang and it turns out it isn't 1965. 1965 is the official model year but it was built on 2nd July 1964 at the Dearborn MI factory and then shipped down to Texas. This makes it one of the very early cars generally called 1964 1/2!
This Mustang GT was much higher spec than a normal 'street' level Mustang but also benefits from further later upgrades:

When the Mustang came out in the early 1960s it quickly became the fastest selling sports car of all time, selling over 1 million cars in just over 18 months. It was introduced in April 1964, sellling 22,000 on its launch day. By 31st December 1964 Ford had sold 121,538 Mustangs. In 1965 sales smashed the half a million barrrier, selling 559,451 and this grew further so that 1966 was its peak sales year, selling 607,568.
To keep our Mustang GT in pristine condition, we take it off the road during the Winter when salt is used on the roads to clear frost and snow. The car is only available for hire from the beginning of April through to the end of November.
N.B. The following:
- This car is Left Hand Drive (LHD) There are four seats with ample room for four adults, but the front and rear seat belts are only fitted with lap type seat belts. It is therefore not possible to fit a child seat or booster safely in the car and we recommend that you do not carry small children in the rear seats.
- This car is only available from 1 April until 30 November.
