We take every driver around a short block to give the chance to get used to the controls and understand the foibles of each of our cars.

Each car goes out on hire with a comprehensive information pack and this includes an instruction sheet of how to operate the controls.

Details for our VW Karmann Ghia are shown below and can be printed off in PDF form by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page.

Controls:

  • Speed/revs:  Please respect the age of this car do not exceed 5,000 revs. The car develops peak torque at 2,800 rpm and runs well between 3,000 and 4,000 revs, which provides both economy and flexibility.
  • Gears:  Gear layout is as shown on the dashboard. The reversing light does not work automatically.  Press the switch under the gear layout symbol on the dashboard.  Remember to turn it off when moving forward.
  • Handbrake:  Handbrake is standard but ALWAYS PARK IN GEAR.
  • Wheels:  The car is fitted with alloy wheels with 165/15 80 tyres. The spare is under the bonnet. The wheel nuts are different sizes, front to rear.
  • Lights:  Pull switch on dashboard - one click for sidelights and two for headlights.  Dip/Main Beam switch is operated by pulling forward the indicator arm.  Panel lights can be dimmed by turning the main light switch.
  • Horn:  The horn is the red button to the right of the dashboard.
  • Heater:  Like all VWs the heater is unusual. There is no heater fan. Heat is controlled by a red topped lever beside the handbrake. There are heater vents behind the seat, in the sills and under the windscreen.
  • Fuel tank:  The car runs on normal PREMIUM (95) UNLEADED PETROL. Tank capacity is 40 litres (8½ gallons) and requires about 25 litres when reading ¼ full.  The petrol filler is under the bonnet.
  • Bonnet:  The bonnet is unlocked by a pulling a lever in the glove compartment.  The bonnet lid will open a little but then the security catch needs to be released to open it fully. The spare wheel, wheel brace and jack are in front of the hinged panel.
  • Boot: There is shallow boot above the engine compartment.
  • The Wave:  In case you find that other VW drivers are flashing their lights at you, or waving - do not worry. Wave back.
  • Picnic: If ordered, this is in the boot with a waterproof rug.
