1969 Chrome Bumper Convertible MGB Roadster Guidance for Drivers
We take every driver around a short block to give the chance to get used to the controls and understand the foibles of each of our cars.
Each car goes out on hire with a comprehensive information pack and this includes an instruction sheet of how to operate the controls.
Details for our MGB Roadster are shown below and can be printed off in PDF form by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page.
To Start:
When cold: Pull out
the choke fully, press the accelerator once and then turn the ignition key.
Press the accelerator again when the engine fires. Use choke for the first few
minutes.
When warm: Do
not touch accelerator, but turn ignition key till it fires, then press
accelerator.
Controls:
Speed/revs: Please
respect the age of this car; although the engine has been rebuilt, do not exceed
5,000 revs unless absolutely necessary. The car runs well between 3,000 and
4,000 revs, which is economical but allows for fun without the tears. You
should, of course, also obey all Speed Limits at all times.
Gears: Gear
layout is as shown on the gear lever. The switch for Overdrive
is on the right hand side of the dashboard. Overdrive works on 3rd and 4th
gears. If you are not familiar with overdrive, then use it as an electrically
operated 5th gear.
Handbrake:
Handbrake is standard but ALWAYS PARK IN
GEAR.
Wheels: The car is
fitted with alloy MiniLite wheels with 185/65 HR tyres. The spare is a wire
wheel fitted with a different section 165/14 Tyre. Treat this as you would a
Space Saver Wheel and restrict speed to 50 mph
Maximum.
Lights: Pull
switch on dashboard - one notch for sidelights and two for headlights. Dip/Main
Beam switch is on the floor to the left of the clutch pedal - where you would
expect to rest your left foot. Panel lights are controlled by turning the switch
between the speedo and rev counter.
Horn: The horn
button is in the centre of the steering wheel.
Fuel tank:
Fill to just below top of filler with PREMIUM (95) UNLEADED
PETROL - the gauge will then read almost full. Capacity is 55 litres
(12 gallons).
Boot: The
boot-lid is held open by a pair of hydraulic struts. To close, push firmly from
the lock until almost closed and then give it a final slam. The spare wheel,
spinner spanner, jack and a few spares are in the boot.
Hood: Fold the
hood down carefully as shown overleaf (instructions taken from the Handbook) so
as not to crease the rear window. Make sure the hood cover clips down securely.
If it isn't warm enough, you can leave the hood up and unzip the rear
window.
The Wave: In
case you find that other MG drivers are flashing their lights at you, or waving
- do not worry. Wave back.
Picnic:
If ordered, this is in the boot with a waterproof
rug.
