1974 Triumph TR6 Technical Specification and History

1974 Triumph TR6
1974 Triumph TR6
Built from 1968 to 1976 the TR6 was the last incarnation of the separate chassis TRs.  The body was re-designed by Karmann of Germany, although the centre section and doors were the same as the TR4 and TR5 (and are physically inter-changeable).

The old four cylinder engine from the TR4 was replaced by the Triumph six cylinder 2,500 litre engine fitted with Lucas mechanical petrol injection.  The TR5 and TR6 were the first UK production sports cars with petrol Injection.

Production:

January 1968 to 1976     – 91,850

Price when new in 1969 - £1,333

From 1967 to 1972 the cars developed 150 bhp, but this was problematical and lumpy in town traffic, and from 1972 was de-tuned to 125 bhp. The petrol Injection did not meet the US emission control regulations, so US cars had the 2,500 litre engine but equipped with twin Stromberg carburettors and only produced about 104 bhp.

The interior remained similar to the TR4 and TR5 with a wooden dash and good quality trim.  The manual gearbox has synchromesh on all four gears and is fitted with overdrive that works on 3rd and 4th gears.

Construction:

Steel chassis with steel body bolted on separately.  All four wings bolt on to the inner wings.

History of PVF 255M:

This car has been the subject of a complete body off restoration from 1988 through the early 1990s.  The chassis was stripped down and re-painted, the suspension rebuilt, all four wings replaced and the body repainted in its original colour of Mimosa Yellow.  The engine was rebuilt and the unreliable Lucas fuel pump replaced with a modern Bosch one.  The car won the award for Best TR at the 1993 Classic Sportscar Show and had covered less than 5,000 miles between then and 2001.  Prior to us buying it, the metering unit was changed so that the car could spend the rest of its life on unleaded petrol.
