1966 Ford Mustang Fastback For Hire

caption

This 1966 Mustang is no longer available for hire. We have replaced it with a 1965 Ford Mustang GT with a manual four speed top loader gearbox and disk brakes on all four wheels.

A friend of ours owns a superbly restored 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback and a couple of years ago he said to me "Shh,  listen very carefully, and you can hear a Ford rust".

Obviously said somewhat tongue in cheek, but in the 1960s Fords, like most other production cars, were not rustproofed.  Although our Mustang has been repainted at least once in its long life, there were a few rust bubbles appearing on the car.

Rust comes up in the usual places on the rear wheel arches and the base of the doors. To stop the rust before it took hold we decided to repaint the car.  As ever with rust there is more than you can see so they replaced both door skins and tidied up the rear wheel arches.  Then the Mustang had a complete repaint.

As of April 2010 the Mustang was back on the road looking absolutely pristine.

When Ford of America launched the 2005 retro styled version of the archetypal Ford Mustang, this created so much interest in the classic 1960s Pony Car that we received enough requests to convince us to add one to our hire fleet.

This addition to our self drive hire fleet was our first non British classic.

Ford Cruise O MaticThis is a beautiful example of a 1966 Ford Mustang 289 cu in Fastback. Although the 289 cu in engine is regarded as the 'small block' V8 engine it still works out at over 4.7 litres.  The American interpretation of the sports car philosophy is somewhat different from the British view.  So this sports car has four seats and an automatic gearbox.  The gearbox isn't just Automatic - it is the Ford Cruise-O-Matic, 3 speed automatic gearbox!  It has the dual range option allowing the driver to start in either first or second gears.

Cruise O Matic - sounds like something out of the cult film "Grease".

When the Mustang came out in the early 1960s it quickly became the fastest selling sports car of all time.  It was introduced in April 1964, sellling 22,000 on its launch day.  By 31st December 1964 Ford had sold 121,538 Mustangs.  In 1965 sales smashed the half a million barrrier, selling 559,451 and this grew further so that 1966 was its peak sales year, selling 607,568.

This is much more of a GT car than a traditional British sportscar and falls into the category that the Americans call "a muscle car".  Basically loads of power, pretty good in a straight line, but the all round drum brakes and road holding don't match powerful British sports cars of the same period.

This Ford Mustang is in fantastic condition and has never been used on salty roads in the UK.  The car sports the 'Deluxe Pony' interior options which means that the seat backs are embossed with charging Ponies.

To keep it in pristine condition the car is only available for hire from the beginning of April through to the end of November.

Our Ford Mustang is featured in the May 2009 Edition of Classic Car Mart where it receives a full five page Road Test under the heading "Wild Horses".

N.B. The following:

  • This car is Left Hand Drive (LHD)
  • This car is Automatic (Cruise O Matic)
  • The car does not have a working radio - you'll have to talk to each other
  • There are four seats with ample room for four adults, but the front seat belts are only fitted with lap type seat belts - and there are no seat belts fitted to the rear seats.  It is therefore not possible to safely fit a child seat or booster safely in the car and we recommend that you do not carry children in the rear seats.

This car is only available from 1 April until 30 November.

This video is nearly 6 minutes long but well worth watching.
