Our MGB is a red open-topped Mark II MGB Roadster, best for the sunniest days with the hood down, but still a great drive with the hood up. Built in 1969 this Mark II MGB is one of the last chrome grille MGBs made.
Our MG was rebuilt in 1995/96 and resprayed from its original yellow to a much nicer Tartan Red. The engine was rebuilt and fitted with a reconditioned gearbox and overdrive. The interior has been re-trimmed in black with red piping and the seats rebuilt in black/red leather.
To complete it, a new hood with zip down rear window has been fitted so that the MGB is usable in all weathers.
The engine is a standard UK specification 1,798 cc 5 bearing 'B' series engine. It is free from US spec emission control equipment, but sports K&N air filters and richer needles in its two SU HS4 carburettors, to improve its breathing. Despite its age we are pretty sure that the engine still delivers its original 95 bhp and 110 lb ft or torque. Being a Mk 2 MGB, it has the later gearbox which has synchromesh on all forward gears, including first and overdrive on third and fourth gears. This proves that it isn't just modern sports cars that have 6 gears. The clutch and gear-change on this car are particularly light, making it the nicest to drive of our whole fleet of cars.
In 2003 we replaced the wire wheels with MiniLite replicas. These are more rigid and easier to balance properly than wire wheels and allow for fitting of more modern profile tyres overall improving both the ride and road holding.
To keep the MGB in the standard we require, we had it resprayed again at the end of 2004, replaced some of the chrome trim and cleaned and polished the rest.
