The Open Road Classic Car Hire

1970 Jaguar E-Type Fixed Head Coupe (FHC)

Do you remember the first time you saw and heard a Jaguar E-Type?  That unique bonnet shape, the unforgettable sound, the promise you made to yourself to drive one, one day.  That day has come - if you haven't managed to buy one yet, then treat yourself - hire an E-Type for a day or a memorable weekend.

Our Jaguar E-Type Coupe is one of the last six cylinder, Series II 4.2 litre, Jaguar E-Types made, being built in September of 1970. By the end of 1970 the Series II had been discontinued as the Series III E-Type Jaguar was being built with its 5.3 litre V12 engine, ready for the 1971 launch.

Our Jaguar E-Type has been lovingly restored by its previous owner. This included much work on the body including a full respray in Signal Red and rebuilding the engine, gearbox and suspension. The interior is trimmed in black leather, of course.

The car is an original UK Right Hand Drive car to UK specification, fitted with the 4.2 litre version of the famous six cylinder Jaguar XK engine. It is equipped with three, 2 inch SU carburettors and free from the emission control equipment that was fitted to the US specification twin Stromberg cars.

Jaguar claimed that the EType developed 265 bhp but it is more generally believed to be nearer to 250 bhp. The US specification cars had about 30% less power so any Americans who have driven an E-Type in the US tend to be surprised at the power of our E-Type.

To keep the car in pristine condition we require for our hire cars, we had it re-sprayed during January 2003 and had the bumpers and other items re-chromed making it a truly gorgeous car.

In the summer of 2003 we replaced the original 4 speed Jaguar gear box with a modern Getrag 5 speed gearbox. The new gearbox provides a much easier gear change for our hire customers and the 5th gear makes it much quieter for high speed cruising. This also makes it a little more economical. While this doesn't make much difference when hiring the car for a single day or a weekend, it made a tremendous difference when we drove the E-Type to Vienna and back on the 2003 MSA Euroclassic.

Also in 2003 we replaced the chrome wire wheels with alloy copies of the racing wheels used on the Jaguar D-Types in the 1950's, supplied by Realm Engineering in Evesham. These wheels are 6 inch wide instead of the standard 5 1/2 inch wheels, allowing for wider tyres. Most tyre suppliers have problems balancing wire wheels and they rarely get it right. The new alloy wheels are now perfectly balanced resulting in a complete lack of any wheel vibration and a smoother ride.

After the standard cast iron exhaust manifold developed a crack this was replaced with a free flow six branch stainless steel manifold. This will never crack, looks much better and slightly improves engine breathing.

This is a beautiful example of this iconic Jaguar sportscar, no wonder our customers describe it as awesome.

In January 2006 our E-Type Jaguar featured as one of three cars on the BBC National Lottery - Millionaire Manor show alongside a Ferrari Enzo and an Aston Martin Vanquish.

Height and weight restrictions:

The cockpit of the E-Type is very narrow, the doors are fairly short and there is limited headroom.  Therefore anyone over 6ft 2in tall (1.88m) or weighing over 18st (252 lbs, 114 kilos) will probably not fit in the car.

For daily, weekend and weekly hire rates for our Jaguar E-Type, see the section on Hire Charges.
