We take every driver for a short drive around our block to give the chance to get used to the controls and understand the foibles of each of our cars.

Each car goes out on hire with a comprehensive information pack and this includes an instruction sheet on how to operate the controls.

Details for our Ford Mustang Convertible are shown below and can be printed off in PDF form by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page.

To Start:

  • When cold:  Mark sure the gear lever is in PARK. Insert the ignition key, turn on the electrics. Press the accelerator once to prime the carburettor and then start. Press the accelerator when the engine fires.  The car has an automatic choke and it may run a little rough until it warms up fully and settles down to a steady idle.
  • When warm:  Mark sure the gear lever is in PARK . Turn the key until it fires, then press accelerator.

Controls:

  • Speed/revs:  Please respect the age of this car and don’t try to over rev it, which is virtually impossible as it is automatic.
  • Gears:  Automatic gearbox with three forward speeds, neutral, reverse and Park.  The White dot starts the car in First gear, the White and Green dot starts the car in Second gear.
  • Handbrake:  The handbrake lever is under the dash board to the left of the steering wheel. Pull on towards you. Turn anti-clockwise to release. Always select PARK gear.
  • Wheels:  The car is fitted with steel wheels with 205/70 R14 whitewall tyres.
  • Punctures:  In the event of a puncture the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace are in the boot.
  • Lights:  The light switch is on the left of the dashboard marked. Pull out first click for sidelights, second click for headlights.  The Dip/Main Beam switch is on the floor to the left of the clutch pedal.  The dashboard lights can be dimmed by turning the light – right to dim, left for bright.
  • Indicators:  The indicator switch is on the left hand (only) stalk.
  • Horn: The horn is operated by pressing the centre of the steering wheel.
  • Fuel tank:  Fill with Premium 95 Unleaded Petrol by removing the large Ford Mustang logo in the centre of the rear panel.  Capacity is 13 gallons (60 litres ).  At around 18 - 22 mpg a full tank should be enough to cover 250 miles.
  • Boot:  The boot is opened by inserting the key and unlocking it.
  • Picnic:  If ordered, this is in the boot with a waterproof rug.

Before you hire our Ford Mustang Convertible for  a day on The Open Road, have a quick look at this clip from an episode of BBC's Top Gear.  It features Jeremy Clarkson waxing lyrical about the 1960s in general and the launch of the Ford Mustang in 1964 which became the fastest selling car of all time.

Jeremy rates it as "the greatest car ever".
