1996 Caterham Super 7 Guidance for Drivers

We take every driver around a short block to give the chance to get used to the controls and understand the foibles of each of our cars.

Each car goes out on hire with a comprehensive information pack and this includes an instruction sheet of how to operate the controls.

Details for our Caterham Super 7 are shown below and can be printed off in PDF form by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page.

To Start:

Cold or Warm: The ignition lock is under the dash to the left of the steering column. Insert the key and turn on the electrics. Once the immobiliser light has flashed and the fuel pump has stopped, press the starter button in the centre of the dashboard.

Controls:

  • Speed/revs As the car only weighs about 600kg it pulls well in any gear and revs freely. There is no need to over-rev the engine.
  • Gears: The car has a 5 speed gearbox with a conventional layout. The gearlever is spring loaded to 3rd / 4th . Reverse is to the left of 1st and up. Press the gear lever down to engage.
  • Handbrake: Handbrake is standard but ALWAYS PARK IN GEAR.
  • Exhaust: The exhaust runs along the passenger side of the car.
    • USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN GETTING IN AND OUT OR STANDING TO THE LEFT OF THE CAR.
  • Wheels: The car is fitted with alloy wheels with 205/45 tyres. The spare is fitted to the rear of the car. A scissor jack, wheel brace and security wheel nut key are in a bag underneath the tonneau cover.
  • Lights: Press the blue illuminated switch on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel - one notch for sidelights and two for headlights. Dip/Main Beam switch is the left one below this and the right hand switch is a spring loaded main beam flasher.
  • Indicators: The indicator switch is a 3 position toggle switch on the dash near the start button. Left for left, right for right. It does NOT self cancel so always needs to be switched back to the CENTRE manually.
  • Horn: The horn push button is on the dash to the right of the steering wheel.
  • Fuel tank: Fill to just below top of filler with 95 UNLEADED PETROL. Capacity is only 25 litres . Do not allow the tank to go below ¼ full.
  • Storage/Hood There is no boot. There is limited storage space under the rear tonneau cover. The hood is stored, loose, under the rear tonneau cover. Undo the tonneau, raise the frame and then lay the hood over the frame. Clip the hood to the windscreen first, then fix the rear poppers and work round the sides. The hood is a tight fit and needs a lot of effort to stretch it into place.
